While I think the explanation given for them returning was contrived, their backstories make them inherently fascinating and I was happy to see them get some extra development after two games of their total absence (although Achenar's actor could have brushed up on his skills, to say the least). All my complaints said, I did very much like seeing Sirrus and Achenar again. It amazes me that a series so keen on minimalism missed the point that sometimes less is more. There's a reason computer UIs have largely continued to use simple cursors and visual cues despite all our tech advancements. This is further exasperated by the highly animated hand cursor they opted to go with in this game, which makes it a lot less obvious when you've hovered over a hot spot. I also missed a ton of ladders and pathways again due to them blending in too well to the scenery - pathways that should have been made as obvious as possible since finding them isn't supposed to be a puzzle. Things like this are all over the game, and it's not helped by the fact that the game loves to drop in little details that are far too easy to overlook (there are not one, but TWO sheets of paper in this same area that are on the ground and blend in with the scenery, when the scenery already is very busy and vivid there's another part where you can lift up a sheet of paper to reveal it underneath, but ONLY when you aren't zoomed in on it. The leaps in logic they expect you to make are downright absurd - for instance, you're supposed to guess that a sheet full of numbers in circles is what a notes sheet that calls it a "music sheet" is referring to. They're not Riven levels of crazy but they're up there. As for the puzzles.my goodness, the puzzles in this game are ridiculous. That said, as the game progressed and I grew to accept this sudden retcon, the story did pick up the slack tremendously at the game's climax, and the ending completely redeemed all those choices in my eyes. Furthermore, I also hated the sudden making of Sirrus and Achenar's trap books into full worlds, as that sort of thing had never been hinted at prior. I was not a fan of how it overrode the ambiguity of Myst 1's ending, as it provided a definitive answer for something that was meant to be left as a question. In terms of story, I have to admit I was very conflicted when starting this game. The environments all get their own deep lore which is a treat if you like world building. The environments are such a joy to look at and are easy to lose yourself in. Credit where it's due, this continues the tradition of Myst games looking phenomenal. So how does it feel with Cyan Worlds back on the director's seat? Well.I have very mixed feelings about this game.
